These chunky-yarned pom poms are to die for. And so much fun to make. My merry and bright lightbox from last year is still one of my favorite holiday projects ever.
It’s all in the yarn with these. I found this yarn at Michael’s and I also saw it at JoAnn’s.
Making pom poms couldn’t be easier. I know there are tutorials out there that call for cardboard circles. Yeah, don’t do that. The simplest way to make pom poms is to wrap the yarn around your hand or fingers (depending on the size you want). For these large pom poms I wrapped the yarn around the palm of my hand and fingers. How many times you wrap it will determine how thick your pom is. I didn’t count how many wraps, I just wrapped it until I thought it looked good.
Slide the yarn off your hand and lay it on a piece of cut yarn. I doubled mine because I had a couple that broke when I was pulling it tight.
Tie up the yarn nice and tight.
Take your scissors and start cutting the loops.
After all the loops are cut the pom will look a little crazy and be more like an oval shape. Just start trimming it up with your scissors. I left some of mine a little longer like this one.
Others, I trimmed up a little more neatly. I really think there’s no wrong way.
Once I had all my pom poms made I tied yarn around the poms to make them into a garland.
I couldn’t stop there. I made another garland to hang above my Christmas star on my mantel. I think it’s the perfect finishing touch.
I even made a couple of little pom pom trees. Seriously, this is getting out of hand.
Happy pom pom-ing!
Until next time….
